A Crustacean in the Stinky Lagoon

One of my most recent paintings, as you can see I am not the greatest painter in the world, it is one of the things I struggle with most. In this particular piece, I tried to give that old painting that has been under the water for years kind of look. I like it, but it is nowhere near the standards I want to put my self in. Spongebob is actually a very personal show for me. It was one of the shows that got me interested in animation. the art direction and character designs in that show take my breath away. This, in my opinion is Stephen Hillenburg's masterpiece, and when he left the show, the episodes, honestly weren't as strong, but I grew up with this show and got my creative juices flowing.

My Drawing Issues

I have Grand Ideas, ambitious projects, great characters in my head, but how do I get those things out of my head and onto a blank sheet of paper? My biggest troubles in animation aren't the ideas, or the designs, it's the drawing. Ever since I was little, I never considered myself a great artist. Maybe for my age, but not to the standards I want to put myself in. I am a perfectionist, and whatever comes out of my pencil has to be up to my standards. I mostly struggle with paintings and gesture drawing, something very, very important to the admission process at Calarts. All my life drawings look disfigured, and wrong. I really, really, really, really, really, really, really want to be a great artist, and throughout the next 3 years, I will work so hard that I will have CTS at the end of each month.

An Apology

Okay...before you say anything about how I haven't put anything on my blog since those terrible life drawings 3 months ago, I just wanted to say sorry. It is just so stressful for me right now,(I am a Freshman in High School). I have 3 Honors classes, so I am on Track for the Honors Diploma, (Which means I will get some major scholarships for Calarts!), and Marching Band, (Which makes me wake up in the middle of the night with cold sweats). I am truly sorry for not posting any art. I am also working on my next Short Film. I had just finished the script, and now I am working on the storyboards (One of my greatest passions!) So........Here is a Character Design I have been experimenting with, "Ratty Rat"- yeah, don't ask.

Nosferatu Film- The 11 Second Animation Competition

While I was surfing on the internet and looking for opportunities to send animation to help me get recognized, I came across a character animation film festival called, "The 11 Second Club", it is basically a film festal where you make an 11 second animated short film, (In any animation medium, Hand Drawn, Computer, and even Stop Motion), send it to the website where it can be featured and there is a competition every month, where one film is picked, and the artist is rewarded. I bursted with excitement, how exciting!, every month! It is also only an 11 second film, how perfect to prefect my animation and make it my "Magnum Opus" or my Masterpiece in a way. I started coming up with ideas for the film, but then I had a great idea. When I was 4 years old, I saw a film that would change my life forever... Fw Murnau's Classic 1922 Masterpiece, Nosferatu. I actually got introduced to this film from animation since it appeared on an episode of "Spongebob Squarepants", but most people are introduced to it from that show. It changed my life, I wanted to be a filmmaker for the longest time, very early. It lead me to my passion, animation. How perfect to pay a tribute to it through the magic of animation! What I wanted to do was come up with some sort of a gag I could put Orlok (The vampire), into. Since It was animation I needed to characterize the famous character. These are some early sketches of trying to design my version of nosferatu (Im not saying they're great sketches, I was just wanting to get a face. Here is a drawing I recently did, but the face is too cartoony and exaggerated, it doesn't look like the character at all. Here are some pages from my sketchbook, sorry for the image but there is no way I am tearing out pages from my sketchbook. Once I get that character to caricature nosferatu, I can start creating my "Magnum Opus".
